Age of Empires is one of the first games of the type to use real historical units and scenarios for the development of the storyline, which makes it really attractive. It is a strategy game which storyline develops in real-time mode. Players have to choose among twelve different civilizations from the Middle Ages (Egyptian, Shang, Greek, Persian, Hititas, Phoenician, etc), to make them rise and advance towards the conquest of the whole world. After choosing the tribe to start with, the player has to build it up from a small Stone Age tribe into a great civilization. In order to do this, the tribe needs to get vital resources from the ones available and they can also make alliances with or conquer other tribes. Having set a goal, the player may choose the strategy to be used so as to achieve it. The storyline goes through different ages, namely the Tool Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age, and in doing so, the technology and resources available upgrade and improve, giving place to further development. Age of Empires also includes a 40,000 word encyclopedia that provides historical notes on Age of Empires. Internet play for up to eight players is also available. |
